The ideas on this website are based on 27 years of experience at product development and delivery. Product development and delivery is a process of finding ways to create value, investing in those ideas, growing them into products, and carefully guiding them to the customer. There are numerous pitalls along the way, thus the name for the website--even the most compelling products must be shepherded to the market. My background includes experience as a software engineer at Bell Laboratories and TRW, and then development management positions at Xerox and at a Xerox Technology Ventures spinout, Document Sciences, where I was Vice President of Development. I am currently CTO of The Return Exchange, a software and services company that serves the Retail industry. I have led or taken part in the delivery of several dozen products and product releases, ranging from small applications to operating environments to integrated systems involving hardware and third party partnerships. I have experience with both large, highly structured and small, agile organizations and projects. I have created entire new product lines and successfully revived and extended legacy products. I’ve participated as a corporate officer in a successful IPO roadshow, an acquisition, and a corporate restructuring and turnaround. My experience and education (an MBA from UCLA and an MS in Computer, Information, and Control Engineering from Michigan) have given me a broad perspective on managing a product company that includes an understanding of marketing, engineering, organization, finance, and strategy. Although my job titles have been for engineering roles, I have contributed in all these disciplines as a senior manager. I serve on the board of the Southern California chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA). |
