You were hired to be strategic, but your week tells a different story. You’re resolving issues, chasing things down, and picking up work because nobody else clearly owns it. Some of that work matters. But what isn’t getting done while you’re doing it?
Being good at solving problems can make you the person everyone turns to. Add unclear ownership and an organization that rewards rescue work, and the pattern becomes hard to break. This is part of what we call structural gravity.
This course looks at what keeps pulling you back—and how to change it. We’ll use your own examples, team mandates, and an engagement model to identify gaps in ownership and show where your effort could make a greater strategic contribution.
You’ll prepare for a conversation with leaders about what needs to change, who needs to be involved, and what the organization stands to gain.
What we’ll work on
- Where your effort goes—and what gets pushed aside.
- Gaps and overlaps in team responsibilities that keep pulling you in.
- Where BRM should contribute to planning, innovation, and strategic decisions.
- How to help leaders see the value of that contribution.
- How to help with an immediate need without becoming its permanent owner.
We’ll use team mandates and an engagement model to make these patterns visible. You won’t leave with a finished model for your organization—that takes your colleagues’ involvement.
You’ll leave with an initial map of where engagement and ownership need attention, and a plan for bringing the right people into the conversation.
Who it’s for
Practising BRMs who understand the fundamentals but struggle to make room for strategic work. BRMP certification is not required.
Before we meet
We’ll send you Where My Effort Goes, a short template to capture examples from a recent week. Allow 15–20 minutes. Estimates are fine; this isn’t a timesheet.
Format and duration
Live, instructor-led online, with discussion, practical exercises, and time to work through your examples.
Six hours, including five instructional hours, one 30-minute break, and two 15-minute breaks.
